Is your daughter good at science and math? This new report may worry you

SALT LAKE CITY — Women employed in science, technology, engineering and math may make more money than people in other fields, but they are professionally hobbled by gender discrimination when they work primarily with men, a new report says.

The report, released Tuesday by Pew Research Center, paints a troubling picture of how women believe they are treated in some of the best-paid and fastest-growing segments of the workplace.

More than three-quarters of women who work in STEM fields at male-dominated workplaces report experiencing at least one type of gender discrimination, ranging from being turned down for a job to making less than a man for […]

‘Quite a big change for Utah’: Businesses promise to interview at least one woman for top-level jobs

There are no women on the 11-member executive team that leads Overstock.com, a Utah-based online store that sells designer brands and home goods.

On its board, a woman serves as chair. There are several women on its vice presidential team. But there are no women at the senior vice president level and above.

In a step toward changing that gender imbalance, Overstock.com has joined at least 27 other Utah-based companies in signing the ParityPledge — a vow to interview at least one qualified woman for all openings at the vice president level and higher, including the board of […]

Utah tech business leaders say harassment issues undercut diversity efforts

SALT LAKE CITY — The recent maelstrom of highly publicized sexual harassment allegations have left few business categories unscathed, but a series of incidents that implicated some mega tech companies, and their CEOs, have cast a pall over an industry already struggling to build diversity in its ranks.

Amid the turmoil, however, some see an opportunity to take the first steps toward a paradigm shift that could lead to better, fairer and safer workplaces for all, while also boosting the ranks of women in a sector that is finding challenges in hiring qualified workers to fuel its explosive growth.

“Winston Churchill said, ‘Never let a good crisis go to waste,'” said Utah Technology Council Board […]

New initiative helping to attract, retain more Utah women in STEM majors

Every semester, women walk into college science, technology, engineering and math courses and are the only female in the room.

“You can imagine if you are the only one in the room who looks like you, you might think you’ve made a mistake,” said Jennifer Nielson, the associate dean in the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at Brigham Young University in Provo.

Far fewer women than men take STEM courses at universities, and even fewer will graduate with a STEM degree. About 40 percent of women who start STEM degrees will switch their majors before they graduate, according to Cydni Tetro, the founder and president of the Women Tech Council.

It’s the reason why the Women Tech […]
