4 Utah Valley companies promoting + supporting women in the workplace

She works hard for the money. (So hard for the money.)

To be frank, the stats regarding women in the Utah workplace are less than fun. At the Women Tech Council’s Talent Innovation Summit, Cydni Tetro, co-founder and executive director of WTC, outlined the tough trends.

Compared to similarly employed men, women earn 70 cents on the dollar. And if current trends continue, women’s pay rates won’t catch men’s until 2102 (yes, 2102!).

Women are also underrepresented at manager, executive and senior-executive level positions. At the moment, they lag more than 5 percent behind men in STEM-related jobs.

And while women in managerial and professional occupations rose from 30 to 38 percent from 2005 […]

Dialogues, Advocates Key in Creating Diverse Company Culture

To create real workplace diversity and equality, dialogues and champions are key, said panelists at the Women’s Tech Council Talent Innovation Summit Tuesday.

While there are many reasons for companies to strive for diversity in the workplace, one is something that virtually every business is always working towards: the bottom line.

“We don’t think about gender because it’s gender—we think about gender in terms of teams,” said Cydni Tetro, co-founder and executive director of the Women’s Tech Council. “There are massive numbers of studies that will tell you teams perform better financially when they have women on that, and they’ve tracked that for many years.”

The Women’s Tech Council has been working to deepen the research and knowledge […]

Utah tech companies take talent-first road to diversity

In these markets, where top companies are competing against each other to lure the top talent from a limited resource pool, the employment version of the “law of the wild” produces results that are simply more fair.

“When companies recruit on a pure, talent-first basis, it creates the most high-performing team,” Tetro said. “It also creates an employee base that is naturally balanced and diverse.”

Cathy Donahoe, an executive from American Fork business software titan Domo, said her company has embraced the talent-first credo since its inception.

“We are freakishly committed to hiring the best person for the job,” Donahoe said. “And when you do that, diversity will happen.”

And, Donahoe said, Domo offers a lot […]

As Tetro explained, the Inclusion Best Practices Forum’s work is to partner with local companies who are leaders in workplace diversity. Forum organizer’s plan to break down these companies’ best practices so they can be duplicated and adopted within other companies. Through this, they will be building data – […]

Annual SheTech Explorer Day Allows Girls to See Themselves in Tech

”The way you get inspired isn’t by looking. It’s by doing.”

Those are the words of Cydni Tetro, president of the Women Tech Council, during the organization’s fourth annual SheTech Explorer Day, held at Utah Valley University. SheTech Explorer Day takes Tetro’s words and brings them to life. 1,200 Utah high school girls spent part of their Friday packed into a loud room filled with nearly 40 company booths, all vying to engage their attention and inspire their creativity.

“You don’t get to have a booth here unless there’s something the girls can do,” said Tetro.

The participating companies seemed to have taken the requirement as a challenge. Girls, […]
