To adequately plan for Utah’s economic future, two major themes summit presenters looked at are business growth and skills education.

Growth

“Utah has the most diversified economy in the nation,” said Natalie Gochnour, director of the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute, in her Friday morning presentation looking at Utah’s economic trends.

While 2018 will continue to be a very strong year economically, Gochnour cautioned that she foresees slower business growth for the state in 2019. Utah’s economy […]

Local Tech Pros Help Us Crack The Girl Code — And Ban The Words ‘Balance’ And ‘Bossy’

For our Spring 2018 issue of Utah Valley BusinessQ, we invited the women to sit at the table — more specifically, we invited women in tech. These local tech pros have cracked the code on how to work in a male-dominated industry.

Bennett, BusinessQ: What advice do you give to women in tech?

Birch, MTEC: I talk to so many girls who think they will be a mom and they don’t need to get an education and work. I’m not saying being a stay-at-home mom is a bad thing. But I tell them that the climate right now is for technology. We don’t have many girls in our programs, and when we do, they are asked […]

Talent Ready grant program calling for new applicants

SALT LAKE CITY — For young people in rural communities in Utah, finding a meaningful career path can be exceptionally challenging. Students in high school often find work at local fast-food establishments and have little understanding of what options could be available beyond that field.

But a program funded by a grant through the state Department of Workforce Services is helping some kids in rural Utah and statewide find their way to potentially life-changing career choices.

Talent Ready Utah launched its 2018 grant program late last month aimed at creating more work-based learning and career pathway programs for students and adults participating in the labor force. This year, total funding allocated for grants will be $1.92 million, […]
