‘Quite a big change for Utah’: Businesses promise to interview at least one woman for top-level jobs

There are no women on the 11-member executive team that leads Overstock.com, a Utah-based online store that sells designer brands and home goods.

On its board, a woman serves as chair. There are several women on its vice presidential team. But there are no women at the senior vice president level and above.

In a step toward changing that gender imbalance, Overstock.com has joined at least 27 other Utah-based companies in signing the ParityPledge — a vow to interview at least one qualified woman for all openings at the vice president level and higher, including the board of […]

Utah tech business leaders say harassment issues undercut diversity efforts

SALT LAKE CITY — The recent maelstrom of highly publicized sexual harassment allegations have left few business categories unscathed, but a series of incidents that implicated some mega tech companies, and their CEOs, have cast a pall over an industry already struggling to build diversity in its ranks.

Amid the turmoil, however, some see an opportunity to take the first steps toward a paradigm shift that could lead to better, fairer and safer workplaces for all, while also boosting the ranks of women in a sector that is finding challenges in hiring qualified workers to fuel its explosive growth.

“Winston Churchill said, ‘Never let a good crisis go to waste,'” said Utah Technology Council Board […]

“Courage is about doing something new,” she elaborated during a question-and-answer session with Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah. “A lot of people are comfortable doing things the old way — and they […]

2017 Women Tech Awards Celebrates Impactful Women In Salt Lake’s Tech Ecosystem

Two weeks ago, the New York Times featured Salt Lake City in an article. Have a guess at what the article highlighted.

Not the mountains.

Not the skiing.

Not the salty lake.

Not religion.

It was all about Salt Lake’s technology industry.

The Wasatch Front is now known as the Silicon Slopes, as it is one of the top regions in the nation for “Unicorns”, or fast-growth tech startups. “The region has given rise to at least five companies valued at more than $1 billion.”

It’s a great ecosystem to be involved in, whether you’re with a tech company, in government, seeking out venture capitalists, or an entrepreneur. There’s a culture of collaboration within the community. And “the emphasis on family permeates many […]

Talent Shortage Rooted in Education, Say Tech Industry Experts

Salt Lake City—Here’s a statistic to chew on: looking at the current pipeline of students, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says that by 2020, an estimated one million computer programming jobs in the U.S. will not be filled. The tech talent shortage isn’t a Utah problem, it’s a national problem—and its roots are dug deeply into our education system.

But how do you solve the STEM education problem? According to some in the tech community, that answer may lie within the industry itself, acting in its own best interest. A group of over 15 technology entrepreneurs and executives met at Utah Business’ annual technology roundtable Tuesday morning at Holland & Hart, discussing topics ranging from […]

From Women To Women: Marketing For Greater Inclusion And Equality

In June, Susan Ho and Leiti Hsu, the co-founders of Journy, spoke out about sexual harassment by a prominent Silicon Valley VC–an action that resulted in his resignation. It also spurred a series of women to come out publicly about sexism, many reporting similar harassment experiences, particularly in the technology segment where women are woefully underrepresented and the power structure, in many cases, is skewed.

In a recent interview conducted by Lisa Wang, co-founder of SheWorx, Ho and Hsu related their discouragement that the conversation surrounding their company now included rhetoric about discrimination, in lieu of a […]
